Couples Therapy: Jump Start Package

Updated: May 3

For couples who find it difficult to commit to regular sessions or for those experiencing high relational distress, Paul is introducing the Jump Start Package. The Jump start is intended to be a short term intervention for couples who are looking for an intensive approach to the issues that cause conflict in the relationship. Below is some information which may be helpful in deciding if the Jump Start is a suitable approach to you...

Before the meeting

Couples complete an individualized online test through the Gottman Institute— which gives Paul a window into the inner life of each partner in the marriage. Answers are scored through the online system and categorized to suggest both the strengths and areas of concern for the relationship. This test needs to be completed at least one week in advance of the Jump Start in order for Paul to give the data a proper assessment.

Morning Session - 9:30-11:30 (2 Hours)

A session is conducted with the couple for about 45 minutes to discuss what brings them into therapy and the results of the score of the relationship questionnaire. After this, Paul will speak with each partner individually to discuss any concerns. This process takes about two clinical hours and then the couple breaks for lunch.

Afternoon Session- 12:00-2:00 (2 Hours)

The couple has a two hour session where Paul helps them understand what is contributing to the problem and coached in ways of how they can relate in a different manner. The style and techniques vary from couple to couple but usually include Solution and Emotionally Focused techniques, as well as exercises from the Gottman Institute. The couple is then given some time to try these new ways of relating out in their every day life and is encouraged to see Paul for a one hour check up when they feel the need to reach out.

Who this Jump Start helpful for?

Couples who seem to be stuck in persistent patterns of conflict. Also couples who have lost the “spark” that they felt at some point in their relationship. The Jump start is also helpful for couples who are considering separation/divorce but willing to attempt a new style of relating before calling it quits.

Who is this Jump Start not helpful for?

Couples who are experiencing ongoing domestic violence, substance abuse or an affair that has yet to end. In these cases, it is recommended that each partner seeks out individual therapy and when ready, begin couples therapy slowly on a weekly to bi-weekly basis. Other contraindications include mental health issues with persistent psychosis or ongoing risk of suicide. In these cases, it is best to seek out the help of other medical professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists and the support of helpers through community agencies.

Cost: $700 (HST included)

Couples are billed for 5 clinical hours (1 hour where Paul spends time interpreting data from the online assessment scoring and 4 hours of direct client care).
